Another favorite author of mine today, Neil Gaiman:

 

He looks kind of British. Thats probably because he is.

 

Thick and wide nose, from top to tip.

 

 

His lips naturally curl up into an almost-there, sort-of half-smile.

Lower eyelids push up in the middle. The eyes kind of look like an upside-down open mouth smile.

I was saddened to read about his battle with cancer, but apparently he's on the road to recovery and the cancer is receding.

Distinct forehead wrinkles.

 

Big blue eyes with bags underneath.

 

A downshot is a rare thing to see in publicity stills. It helps with your understanding of the forms of the face to see it from an unusual angle.

Terry Pratchett

Today's face belongs to one of my favorite authors, Terry Pratchett:

John Lennon glasses, slightly disfigured nose, full cover beard.
The eyes have a unique shape to them, like a low and wide triangle.. The eyelids drag down on the outside of the eyes, creating a deep fold.

Never without his beard, and usually wearing a stetson hat.

 

I've felt for a while now that there's something weird about the way he writes. The pacing of his books, strangely, is much like in a movie and the way he writes and describes what's happening makes me feel like I'm reading a movie. No, not a movie script, but a movie. It's something that I feel really sets him apart when it comes to writing style.

He's got real funny eyebrows in some of these pictures. Bushy, wiry and unkempt.
Also large, flat ears.

John Lennon

John LennonVery soft here, almost childlike features. A lot of it is the lighting, but Lennon's got very smooth features. That makes his nose very distinct, it provides contrast to the rest of his face.

He's got very thick eyebrows.
Hair and beard in full force.
Pay attention to the nose. It's easily the most recognizable part of his face (aside from his signature glasses). It looks quite long, but that's just because it dips so far down. That dip, that slant of the tip, is something I find very interesting. It draws you in, really sets his face apart.
The tip of his nose looks like it's been pinched.

See how his chin sort of leads up into his cheeks?
It's a very manly kind of chin, impressive stuff.

And to point out just how much difference hair makes:
Yep, that's the same person as in all the other pictures. Hair makes a huge difference to the look of the face and if you're drawing a caricature it should make a huge difference to how you approach the drawing.

Michael Emerson

Today we have another star from Lost. Michael Emerson portrays the role of Benjamin Linus.
Slightly gaunt looking face.


Make note of the curve on the front of his nose.

The area around his eyes is very peculiar. Creases and protrusions create shadows that envelop his eyes and frame them.



 Lips slightly off-kilter. His eyes appear strangely small in this photo compared to the rest of his face.

Terry O'Quinn

Today's face is Terry O'Quinn's, which you may be familiar with from the TV series Lost.
He's got large ears and a nose with a bulbous, downward pointing tip. His face is covered in cracks, crow's feet and deep lines.

Here's a man who seems happy and content. This man truly knows how to smile like he means it.
Here's a younger Terry with a full head of hair. Almost unrecognizable from his appearance today.

Here's a great moment from the first season of Lost starring Terry O'Quinn:

William H. Macy

First up is William H. Macy.

Look at that nose! So short, it and the eyes are almost like one object! It also has a very distinct, obvious triangular shape to it, more so than on most people. Something to think about if you're drawing him. Also make note of the larger-than-usual gap between his nose and lips and the way his cheeks jut out.

What a difference a beard makes! Almost doesn't look like the same person.
